Mental Health and Creative Writing

Writing requires so much more than a creative story. Let’s start with a healthy mental space! The way you think, what you eat, how you perceive the world around you has everything to do with how motivated and disciplined you are to write. Here are a few things you can do to help you increase creativity and flow.

1. Positive Affirmations

Be polite to yourself! Speak and think highly of yourself. Affirm that you are a writer with a story that the world needs to hear.

I am a creative writer.

I am dedicated to the process even when it’s not easy.

I am a powerful storyteller.

I am disciplined and will complete my story.

I am worthy.

I am blessed to have an opportunity to do what I love.

Rewire your thinking about yourself! It makes you a more confident creator.

2. Schedule time to write!

I suggest writing for 45 minutes at a time with a 15-20 minute break. It’s ok if you only write for 45 minutes and he first few times.. take the next opportunity to extend the time. Next time write for a hour and 15 minutes, with a 30 minute break! The goal is to discipline yourself and become intentional about writing. It must turn from hobby, to a must do!

3. A healthy diet.

I know.. I know.. diet!!! I’m not saying lose weight! I’m saying be more cautious about what you intake. It could be the reason you’re not producing as much “productivity” chemicals in the brain. Before you dive into writing, eat an apple or a really healthy snack. Drink water. Take your vitamins! You don’t understand how little changes in our our diet helps increase brain functionality!

You see.. writing is more than pen to paper.. it’s a lifestyle. Your brain is your body’s computer! Update it, clear out the virus, and clear up space for new and improved creative ideas!!
