We Got A Planner!
Finally! A planner for screenwriters! I don't know about you, but I feel like we're in the era of planners. You can find a planner for literally anything, except for writing. After many years of script consulting I realized the need for an extensive, yet simple story planner. At that moment Kick *ss Story Outline was born.
Maximize Your Story Planner.
Now that you have a bit of backstory, let's get into the planner! While designing the Kick *ss Story Outline, I considered a few things. What are those things, you ask?
1. Questions Left Unanswered
So many writers don't take the time to really dissect their concept before diving into the script. I think it's because they don't know what questions to ask themselves about their story. This ultimately means the characters are undeveloped, many plot holes and overall, an incomplete story. I have asked every question you need to know about your characters, world/settings, and plot points. This gives you the opportunity to become intimate with your story. Enabling you to message the story kinks out, before writing the script.
2. Writers Block
Writers block is more common than not. I had to consider the amount of writers, of all levels, that unexpectedly collide with a creative block. It's funny, but not so much when you're in the thick of it. I too understand the frustration and stagnation! It sucks. So, not only did I ask a ton of questions, I organized them. You're developing and structuring your story at the same time! This eliminates the feeling of being scatter brained. Ultimately reducing writers block.
3. Story Structure
When it comes to creating a marketable screenplay, there is a standard. The story must unfold seamlessly! In every one of your favorite films or shows, there is a certain way it unfolds. Some refer to it as 3 ACT or 5 ACT, nevertheless, they contain the same ingredients listed below.
Introduction/Exposition
Inciting Incident
Rising Action
Climax
Falling Action
Resolution/Cliffhanger
The order of how these unfold cannot be rearranged. That's just a rule you can't break. Don't try it! It's industry standard, as well as market demand. I have methodized the questions in synchronicity with above structure, so you don't have to!
4. Pitching
I have a huge place in my heart for independent filmmakers. I have worked with so many writer/producers, writer/directors and writer/director/producer! Some are so eager to speed up the writing process to get to funding or production, haven't really taken the time to get to know their story. This cripples your pitch. Outlining your story will help effectively communicate your vision. I've asked just about every question a producer, studio executive, industry reader would ask.
You need to be ready to explain your story in under 3 minutes, at the drop of a dime. Not sparing important information! How can you do that? Dissect your story! Understand your characters. Have a clear and structured storyline. Yes, the Kick *ss Story Outline is also a pitching tool!
